Exhale Into The Present

We have been discussing breath a lot the last week. In fact, I have a whole book dedicated on learning how to breathe and the yogic practice of pranayama.

I have a deep appreciation for the healthy mind body connection I have gained through yoga. Yet only after learning more about pranayama have I begun to realize that a lot of that has to do with breath. I mentioned that my definition of yoga is a practice of connecting mind and body, movement and breath, body and spirit.

What I understand now is that breathe is the flowing force connecting

Of course I have days where I cannot focus and bring my attention into the room, into that very moment. Yet even when I have those days, acknowledging that I am having difficulty staying present helps me to further ask why?

What is going on in my life that is taking my attention away from the present?

What can I do to fix it?

Sometimes they are big problems that have been following me around. Sometimes they are small things that happened earlier that day. Through yoga, I have learned that in those moments I have to let go.

The flow of the breath is the flow bringing us back to our center within our hearts when the mind takes us too far astray
— Doug Keller Refining The Breathe

Why let it bother me? Why give it my attention?

It is in these exact moments where I can let go of my mind and learn to connect with my body.

What I have noticed is the stress and worry melt away with every exhale. Using my breath I intentionally let go of whatever is bothering me with every exhale and surrender to the moment.

Exhaling and getting deeper and deeper into the present.
